Good Prenatal Health
As a mother-to-be you will want to stay as healthy as possible during your pregnancy. The healthier you are, the healthier the baby will be also. Eating right is part of being healthy and you will want to make sure you have a good diet.
Regular Doctor Visits
Regular visits to your obstetrician or midwife are a must. Initially, visits may be every two months, then monthly, and as you get closer to your due date, even weekly. This allows the doctor to make sure everything is going well for you and the baby. Certain tests are taken at various times during the pregnancy. Many of these tests are done during your first appointment. Some are necessary and some you will need to make a choice about. Research everything about pregnancy and make informed choices.
Be truthful with your doctor. Share with her your questions and concerns. That is what the doctor or midwife is there for – you and your baby. If the healthcare provider giving you prenatal care does not have time to answer questions or listen to your concerns, find someone who will.
Exercise
It is important to get plenty of exercise while pregnant. While it is not recommended that you start a vigorous exercise program during your pregnancy, you can certainly continue to do many of the same things you were already doing. If you do not regularly exercise normally, you might start walking. Start out walking a mile a day and work up from there. Swimming is good for you, especially as your body becomes bulky.
Certain things should be avoided later in the pregnancy such as horseback riding. You do not want to risk falling. Common sense should tell you whether or not what you want to do is acceptable. If you are not sure then skip it.
Sleep
Good sound sleep is very important. In the first trimester nausea may keep you from resting as well as frequent trips to the bathroom. During the last trimester you are simply uncomfortable, physically, and again there are those trips to the bathroom. Learn to take naps during the day. Even brief, ten minute rests can make a big difference. If you are unable to nap, at least put your feet up and rest for a few minutes throughout the day.
