First and Second Months of Pregnancy

This is the time frame when you first discover you are pregnant. You may have not even been trying, but noticed you feel tired and nauseated. You may have noticed you have missed your menstrual cycle this month or be wondering why you are late starting it. Congratulations you are pregnant!

Doctor’s Exam

You can take a home pregnancy test if you think you are pregnant. The tests today are extremely accurate. But you will want to get with a doctor or midwife soon to verify your pregnancy for sure. Signs that you might be pregnant are fatigue, moodiness, missed period, and swollen breasts. The physician can also tell from changes in your uterus and cervix.

When you go for a check-up the first time, and if you prove to be pregnant, you will be given a complete physical. The doctor will ask for your past medical history and will draw some blood. Pregnant women are tested for a number of things ranging from anemia to venereal diseases. Some of the tests are optional, while others are mandatory.

The Baby

Your body is changing as your baby rapidly grows. What started out as two cells has quickly multiplied into a tiny human. At four weeks your baby is still very, very tiny. She is not much bigger than a sliver and looks very much like a tiny tadpole.

During the second month the baby is going to start developing its body’s main systems, the heart, neural system, digestive system and tiny arm and leg buds.

Mom

You may experience several emotions ranging from excitement to fear of the upcoming birth. Being weepy is normal during this time even for women who usually are not quite this emotional. You may find yourself unable to even look at certain foods. Be sure and get plenty of rest.

Your body is working to grow a new life. Take naps or short breaks and elevate your feet. Now is not the time to diet or make major changes in your life. Eat right and exercise. Take your prenatal vitamins. Go out and celebrate with your spouse or some friends. It is an exciting time in your life.
